East London

East London is the largest sub-region of London with ten boroughs to its name. They include Barking and Dagenham, Greenwich, Hackney and Lewisham.

The East End docks have historically played a huge role in the British economy. Unfortunately, in the early days, this made East London a dangerous and rather unpleasant place to live. Thankfully, shipping technology developed considerably and the docks fell out of favour, leading to their closure in 1981.

Throughout the 1980s, 60% of the area was derelict – and then Canary Wharf arrived. These days, the presence of tube stations at Walthamstow and Leytonstone makes it perfect for commuters, but the area remains popular with families, too.

Since the 80s, rundown warehouses have been given a facelift and swathes of creative types flocked to areas like Bethnal Green and Shoreditch, making East London one of the most unique, vibrant areas of the city.

It has a vibe quite unlike any other part of the city, and also includes some excellent markets such as Hackney Flea Market, Old Spitalfields and Walthamstow Market.

It should come as no surprise that East London is the most popular film location in the city. Oliver! Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Patriot Games are just some of the huge films that were shot here.‍

Chimney Sweeping and Maintenance in East London Area

It’s fair to say that East London is the home of the ‘true’ Londoner (and we can say that because we’re Londoners ourselves). Known affectionately as the ‘cockney’, you can technically only be labelled that way if you were born within the sound of Bow Bells at St Mary-le-Bow church in Cheapside.

Paul, the owner of SweepSmart, was born in St Bartholomew Hospital’s last maternity ward within the sound of Bow Bells. Through fate or coincidence, the hospital closed its maternity ward shortly after. Still, at least you know you can get your East London chimney swept by a true cockney!

We’re often found providing our services in the higher density family home areas of Walthamstow, Leyton, Stratford and Hackney. We’ve also been tasked with sweeping the flues at the historic Wilton’s Music Hall in Whitechapel – a place that we can confirm is definitely worth a visit.
